Chapter 5

Untangling networks: Using design methods to grow collaborative innovation beyond the classroom

Authors: Lara Salinas

Abstract

This chapter delves into the design and implementation of a canvas tailored to foster a culture of collaborative innovation within a Higher Education institution. It presents a case study centered on the development and deployment of a canvas: an online visual tool that supports academic teams to have a structured conversation offering a platform for reframing teaching and learning activities as conducive to collaborative innovation. The canvas operates at both macro and micro scales: at a macro level it drives organizational change by revealing the dynamic interplay between teaching, research and knowledge exchange. At a micro level the canvas supports academic teams in unpacking the intricate network of collaborations that underpin project-based learning and align them with institutional strategic objectives. The chapter outlines the design journey of the canvas and prompts reflection on the distinctive advantages of employing these design approaches compared to traditional practices in Higher Education. Through these insights, this chapter equips readers with insights on how service design can support organisational change in Higher Education.
