Chapter 16

Discovering the untold story: emotional journey mapping of learners’ educational experience

Authors: Radka Newton

Abstract

The chapter provides an insight into the value of visualising the learner’s educational experience using an emotional journey mapping approach. Visualisation of the intangible will be presented as a powerful demonstration of how we experience learning throughout our lives, as well as in University settings during degree programmes, short courses or educational conferences and events. Every learning experience can be mapped as a journey from the point of our first interest to the time we complete the learning, reflect and take our learning to the future. The chapter will discuss a variety of applications and purposes of journey maps and will provide inspiration to incorporate this method as a reflection tool, design communication tool and a tangible articulation of learners’ experience leading to the co-creation of education. It will demonstrate a human-centred approach enhancing an understanding of the feelings, frustrations and emotions associated with learning activities. Three cases studies from educational service design practice will provide an opportunity to reflect on how journey maps have been applied in a variety of education settings, fulfilling a range of purposes and engaging diverse participants showcasing the flexibility of this service design method.
