Did you know that it will take us good 2 years to get our lovely book out to the world. Well, we simply can’t wait that long and that is why we have been enjoying some online meet ups to chat about our writing, share ideas and also get some tips for our very own Meredith from Routledge!
Meredith has been of a great support since we first met in February 2022. As an experienced publisher, she has guided us through the book proposal stage to the contract signing and here we are, starting the writing journey together again.
As a community of educators who are driven by human-centered design and collaborative approach, we love hanging out together and checking in with each other. It keeps us going and we believe our readers will get that from the book quality.
In the session with Meredith, we focused on two main areas:
- Tone of the writing – we will endeavor to unify but let’s remain playful to provoke, encourage and inspire. Always imagine your reader who will be somebody at a University who is a change maker waning to try a new approach to making students and staff experience better. It can be an academic who wants to improve their course, an administrator who is getting too many email enquiries and wants to make their students’ lives easier, or an admissions manager who feels frustrated about process driven way we admit students to universities. Your voice will speak to them in an empathetic way so they will feel they can do it too! But we have to be fair and say – this won’t be easy.
- Check permissions – if you are using names of institution, please, get a written approval that this is ok – an email is good enough. Don’t assume it is ok to name people and institutions without checking.
So helpful, isn’t it! So off you go, designers, build a persona of your reader and make sure it is written for her or him or them, not just for you!
Next meet up in London! How exciting is that!!!
